Terrific breads and food in general!!
Great service, wonderful, relaxing ambience, and amazing food. You'll find the best bread around here, and their other food (soups, salads, sandwiches) all feature the freshest ingredients and the highest-quality ingredients. Recently added a "bagel wing" and also now serves wine. Love this place!    [03 Sep 2004 22:52:47]

Cucarachas enojadas!
The Scholar's Inn Bakehouse has a reputation for great service and great food, but I feel that the establishment embelishes its worth. With cockroaches adorning the walls and flies buzzing around the pastries it leaves your pockets empty and your stomach woozie.

Clearly not all the ingrediants are fresh where as canned goods are delivered daily by the Alliant man.

The bread is fabulous and you can see the bakers put a lot of hard work into making it. However, I leave this place feeling let down.    [22 Dec 2004 16:26:57]

A Nice Morning Pick Me Up
The Bakehouse is great place to go in the morning. Just sitting down with a cup of coffee and an everyseed bagel with cream cheese is simple happiness.    [06 Nov 2005 12:04:07]

Nice location
This is the kind of place that can only fly in the midwest. Sells itself as an upscale bakery, but fails to deliver. The croissant based pasteries are pale and limp, but priced as if they were overnighted from a Parisian bakery. The bread, I will admit, is a visually stunning, but tastes of cardboard. The bagels - a bready imitation. Nonetheless, it's a nice place to meet people and the regular coffee is exceptional (really). Grab a cup and watch the town stroll by.    [03 Mar 2006 10:26:16]

Things ain't what they used to be
I've always enjoyed the Bakehouse for its quiche of the day and pastries. Sadly, things seem to have gone downhill over the last couple of years. The tables are often dirty and the silverware is consistently unclean. The quiche is obviously microwaved and the egg sandwiches have been served to me cold on more than one occasion. The staff seems increasingly apathetic.

Bakehouse (downtown) no longer seems to draw the large morning crowds of the past. This might be a result of a second location that opened on the city's east side.

When a restaurant/bakery has as much potential as Bakehouse (as evidenced by its past success), increased attention to minor details by the management and staff would be a small price to pay to keep the regulars from straying.

The chocolate and almond croissants still keep me coming back, although the price ($2.75) is definitely reducing the frequency of my visits.    [26 Mar 2006 20:51:40]

Look, drink, but don't eat
Nice atmostphere, acceptable coffee. The food is not good, and the pouting, hair-tossing staff behind the counters do not inspire confidence. Bread, pastries, sandwiches and lunch foods carry big-city price tags without the equivalent quality. They like to microwave things to reheat them: avoid this at all costs. Seating near the windows and along the sidewalk provide good people-watching on Saturday mornings, but otherwise, it's not worth the trip.    [12 Sep 2007 21:30:26]
